Burlingame CA protects trees

Burlingame CA committed to the beauty of trees

The city of Burlingame CA demonstrates its commitment to the environment and the benefits trees offer it by protecting local trees.

In fact, the city designates certain trees, including those on private property, as “protected trees”. Trees receive this designation if they have a circumference of 48 inches and a height of 54 inches above ground. If residents feel the need to cut down or radically prune “protected trees”, they must obtain a permit from the city to do so.

To apply for the permit, call the parks department at (650) 558-7330, or email them at parks_trees@burlingame.org. The City Arborist will come out and evaluate the tree being considered for removal or radical pruning. Additionally, the charge for applying for a permit is $75.

Trees on city property in front of businesses or residences are considered “street trees”. Residents must apply for a permit before attempting to cut down or trim “street trees”.

Why this commitment to preserving trees?

The city of Burlingame provides many reasons for maintaining an urban forest by protecting trees throughout the city. Here are a few of the benefits trees provide to city residents.

  • Trees create “a tapestry of color” in the city.
  • Green serves as a “calming color.” So, trees help eyes to recover quickly from strain.
  • People are more motivated to walk or jog more on streets shaded by trees. This promotes a sense of community when people stop to chat with each other.
  • If trees are on property that is for sale, it will sell more quickly and will be worth 5-15% more than property without trees.
  • If an entire street is lined with trees, those properties may be worth as much as 25% more than average.
  • When trees are strategically placed around buildings, they can reduce the need for air conditioning by 30%. As a result, the energy used for temperature control may decrease by 20-50%.
