Burlingame High School recognized among the best

The community rating company Niche.com recently released its list of the best 100 high schools in California, and Burlingame High School made the cut, coming in as #37. According to the Burlingame-Hillsborough publication Patch, all the schools on the 100 best list received an overall A+ score. The Niche ratings include traditional, magnet and charter schools.

According to Quora, California has a total of 3,892 high schools. Out of those, 3,162 are public schools.

How did Niche come up with these ratings?

The Niche website describes its methodology for determining the best schools in any category and region. It receives the most current school-reported data from the United States Department of Education and rigorously analyzes it to determine school rankings. Additionally, rating decisions for most of these categories included survey responses from students and their parents.

Here is a list of the criteria Niche used for Burlingame High School’s excellent educational ranking.

  • Academics – Weighted 60% – This is based on state proficiency assessments and ACT/SAT scores.
  • Culture and Diversity – Weighted 10% – Data regarding economic and racial diversity at a school determines this rating.
  • Teachers – Weighted 10% – Information for this criteria includes state test results, teacher absenteeism and salaries.
  • Health and Safety – Weighted 2.5% – Data was collected regarding chronic student absenteeism, suspensions and expulsions.
  • Facilities and Resources – Weighted 2.5% – Data regarding school expenditure per student and staffing determined this part of the ranking.
  • Clubs and activities – Weighted 2.5% – This criteria was also based on expenditure per student.
  • Sports – Weighted 2.5% – Niche received data for this category that included the number of sports available and participation rates.
  • Overall experience – Weighted 10% – Niche received its information regarding this category solely from survey responses from students and parents. The survey called on respondents to rate schools on a scale of 1 to 5.

In addition to recognizing elementary and secondary schools, Niche also ranks the Best Places to Live, Best Colleges and Best Places to Work, among others.
