Priced out of the San Francisco Bay Area housing market? Check out these creative housing options.

Coit Tower, S.F., CA

While the rest of the world is amazed or simply amused by the surging prices for housing we have in the Bay Area, one couple has documented it and one google employee has found a creative way to thrive.  Is his plan part of a bigger movement?  What can a middle class couple who wants to stay in the Bay Area and buy a home do?

Michelle Joyce and Steve Fyffe created a documentary about the struggle to find and stay in affordable housing in the Bay Area and what it means for the region when an entire demographic group cannot afford to stay here.

Good Morning America recently featured a story about an employee who is saving 90% of his salary by living in a 128-square-foot truck.  He really just sleeps in the truck; he eats, showers, works and parks at the Google campus.

The idea of a workforce that lives onsite isn’t new and it’s been the key to getting your Christmas gifts on-time from Amazon.  Is it part of a bigger movement?  It’s never been easier to live, or sleep in your vehicle and remain connected.  Here is one thriving online community , there are many others.

Then there is the renter who bought a 136 square foot sail boat as her new home rather then pay S.F.’s steep rental prices.

The take-away for me is that right now, with real estate, unless you are wealthy, flexibility is key.  What do you think?
