Day at the Museum

Enjoy ‘A Day at the Museum’

Leads Club San Mateo is hosting “A Day at the Museum” at the Peninsula Museum of Art and Studios in Burlingame, CA Nov. 9 (Saturday) 1:30-3:30 p.m. The event offers guests the opportunity to stroll through the art displays, see wearable art in action and network with artists, entrepreneurs and other business people.

A museum “open house” will be in progress and families are welcome.

The Peninsula Museum of Art is an 18,000 square-foot complex providing five exhibition galleries as well as classrooms and studios for 30 working artists with the Peninsula Art Institute. The complex has been open since 2013, and the museum’s open hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. Admission is always free.

Museum background

Working artist Ruth Waters founded the museum. Waters wrote that her dream for the museum started to form when she, along with her husband and three children, moved from Washington, D.C. to Northern California. When she first started trying to suggest the idea for a museum, there seemed to be a general attitude in the Bay Area that its “art scene” was sufficient.

However, the disastrous Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989 forever altered the generally urbanized view of art resources in the Bay Area. The severely damaged transportation infrastructure motivated San Francisco Peninsula residents to look for cultural amenities in their own closer localities.

The first museum site was leased space in Belmont. However, one of Waters’s friends introduced her to Charles Homer who wanted to use his money to offer something significant to his community. So, Homer wrote a $1 million check to launch a museum building fund. That donation sparked a remodeling project that led to the opening of the museum’s current site in Burlingame.

The Museum is located at 1777 California Drive. The phone number is (650) 692-2101.
