Taste and Take event to benefit girls’ school

Mercy High School in Burlingame CA will benefit from the proceeds of a Taste and Take party at the Kohl Mansion (2750 Adeline Drive) Friday, Nov. 22, 7-10 p.m. The festivities feature local wines, craft beers, spirits, food and live music at the beautiful Burlingame landmark.

Why Mercy High School?

Mercy High School is a Catholic all-girls’ school. It provides a rigorous education for girls with faith, values and care for the whole student at the core of its efforts.

These are the main goals of Mercy High School:

  • Fostering a strong understanding of faith and values
  • Encouraging a drive in the girls to obtain knowledge and achieve academic excellence
  • Instilling a sense of purpose and community in the students
  • Teaching students to advocate for themselves and others
  • Inspiring the development of balance between outlook and action

Not only does Mercy High School provide instruction to high school age girls, it offers a month-long summer program called Tools for School that introduces middle school age girls (6th, 7th, and 8th grades) to the educational concepts of the high school. The summer program includes academic skills-building, weekly educational field trips and visual and performing arts classes, and much more.

History

After founding San Francisco’s St. Mary’s Hospital in 1924, eight young Sisters of Mercy established their first high school, Mercy Burlingame, in the Kohl Mansion in 1931. Since then, more than 8,000 young women have graduated from Mercy.

The Sisters of Mercy have recently requested that their ministries provide education and outreach programs in subject areas they call the “Critical Concerns.”

Those subject areas include:

  • Women
  • Non-violence
  • Immigration
  • Racism
  • The earth
