Eight Quick Tips for Living Green

Discover simple ways to save energy and money while making your home more environmentally friendly. Start living green today!

Today, living green isn’t just a lifestyle choice — it makes solid financial sense. As home energy costs increase, homeowners are seeking simple and smart ways to save energy and, in turn, save money.

Trying to create a more environmentally sound household doesn’t have to start with installing solar panels or taking out a massive loan. Here are eight easy and practical ways to start living green:

1. Swap Out Incandescent Bulbs for CFLs

Replace all your traditional bulbs with compact fluorescent lights (CFLs). CFLs last 15 times longer and use two-thirds less energy — saving at least 2,000 times their own weight in greenhouse gases. Plus, they now cost less than $10.

2. Start Recycling

If your city offers recycling services, start sorting your trash. If not, begin separating your recyclables at home and take them to a local center. Many facilities offer cash in exchange for bottles and cans — potentially enough to cover a utility bill.

3. Reduce Household Waste

Cut down on what you throw away. Unsubscribe from junk mail, eliminate paper towels in favor of cloth rags, and avoid products with excess packaging. Even skipping magazine subscriptions you barely read helps cut back on waste.

4. Install a Programmable Thermostat

A programmable thermostat ensures your HVAC system only runs when necessary. It’s a low-cost investment with quick returns — most homeowners recoup the cost within a month or two through energy savings.

5. Use Large Fans Before Air Conditioning

On warm days, open your windows and use large fans to create cross-ventilation before turning on your A/C. If your unit is over 10 years old, consider upgrading — older systems can use up to 50% more energy than newer models.

6. Take Shorter Showers

Two-thirds of most home heating bills are tied to hot water — especially from showers. Install a water-saving shower head and time your showers to reduce water and energy use.

7. Change Your Ventilation Filters

Dirty filters make HVAC systems work harder, consuming more energy. Replace them at least twice a year to maintain efficiency and air quality.

8. Clean Your Fridge’s Coils

Use a vacuum’s brush attachment to clean your refrigerator coils, located on the back or behind the bottom front grill. This helps your fridge run more efficiently and prevents overheating. Also, remember to replace the water filter if your fridge dispenses water.
