If you’re a fan of high-quality, locally sourced meats and specialty cuts, the Bay Area is home to some outstanding butcher shops. From rare finds like pork secreto to porchetta that makes you drool, here are some of my favorite spots to shop, eat, and be inspired.
Avedano’s Holly Park Market – Bernal Heights, SF
235 Cortland Avenue, San Francisco, CA 94110
Avedano’s is my go-to for locally sourced, sustainable meats. It’s where I first discovered pork secreto, a hard-to-find cut that’s thin like flank steak and absolutely delicious when seared.
They also offer small bags of produce, tasty-looking sandwiches, and the butcher team includes women co-owners—which is unique and worth highlighting.
If you're based in the UK, pork secreto is available online at Meat Me At Home.
Olivier’s Butchery – Dogpatch, SF
Tucked away in Dogpatch, Olivier’s is a meat lover’s dream. The beautifully curated, freestanding fridges are stocked with incredible cuts.
We once grilled cowboy steaks from here, and they were outstanding—huge, flavorful, and perfect for sharing (though a bit of a splurge at around $45–$50 each, depending on weight).
Available online via Snake River Farms.
Fatted Calf – Hayes Valley & Napa
Fatted Calf not only offers amazing meats, but also a curated selection of dry pastas, beans, olive oils, cheeses, and even my favorite bubbly, Brachetto d’Acqui.
Highlights include:
-
Cured meats
-
Marinated pork and beef cuts
-
Incredible porchetta (wrapped in pork skin for a crispy chicharrones effect)
-
Pork terrine with chicharrones – a perfect, decadent starter to the porchetta
Pape’s Meat Market – Millbrae
An excellent source for high-quality meats and seafood. They dry-age meats in a beautiful display case and offer marinated selections sealed in sous vide bags for convenience.
There’s also Bacchus Wine Shop in the same space, which carries a well-curated selection of wines and cheeses. The butchers have been there for years and are always kind and knowledgeable—a true neighborhood gem.
To round out your dinner menu, stop by Dean’s Produce just down the block.
On My Radar: Gambrel & Co – Redwood City
I recently came across Gambrel & Co during my research and definitely need to visit. Their selection looks fantastic and the reviews are solid.
